Pencil Control

Welcome to our section on Pencil Control!

Young children's writing begins with mark making when toddlers hold a pencil or crayon in their fist. Using chalk outside is also a fun way to encourage this. As children grow, their fine motor control improves and they learn to manage their mark making. Once in Nursery/Reception, controlling a pencil is one of the skills they will practise.

Sections such Colouring in Pictures, Colour in & Count and Dot to Dot support pencil control, and once children are happy using a pencil, they can move onto Handwriting. Many of the activities in this section are created specially for pencil control. Enjoy!
